8. The Faculty of Medicine will accept applications only once per year. Please make sure to nominate students interested in studying at the Faculty of Medicine in the following academic year before the nomination deadline of 10 April. Students need to have completed at least three years of studies prior to the exchange and provide proof of German language proficiency level B1 CEFR.

1. Living expenses (excluding rent) amount to approx. EUR 500-700/month.
2. Incoming exchange students without European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) are required to take out German statutory health insurance (approx. 110 EUR/month for students).
3. Incoming exchange students can take free of charge if space is available. Pre-semester intensive language courses (usually A1-B2) start approx. two weeks prior to the start of the semester.
4. Semester fees: All students of Universität Hamburg, including exchange students, pay a mandatory contribution fee per semester (reduced fee for exchange students in Summer Semester 2025: EUR 293), which includes a public transport pass for the Hamburg Public Transport Area

A limited number of rooms in student residences are available for incoming exchange students; rents vary (EUR 370–510). The housing application form provided by the exchange coordinator must be submitted by 15 June for the winter semester, by 15 December for the summer semester.

We recommend to apply for a student residence hall, but incoming exchange students are free to search for accommodation on their own. Rents vary according to size and location, but are usually much higher than in residence halls.
